Typhoid is a bacterial infection that can cause high
fever, diarrhoea and vomiting.
Typhus is a disease caused by an infection with one
or more rickettsial bacteria. Fleas, mites, lice and ticks are types of
invertebrate animals known as arthropods.
Difference between Typhoid and Typhus:
Both this typhoid and typhus disease are infections,
but they are caused by different types of bacteria that spread in different
ways. It is transmitted by the fleas that contract the disease of rats and
opossums. Typhoid fever is transmitted through foods that come in contact with
faecal bacteria. For example, a food worker could use the bathroom, not wash
their hands and then contaminate the food they are handling, which infects the
person who eats it.
Symptoms
The clinical symptoms can be very similar: fever,
muscle aches, headache and, possibly, a rash on the trunk or back.
Identify these two Diseases
Symptoms such as diarrhoea or constipation are seen
more frequently with typhoid fever than with typhus. A doctor can make a
diagnosis using different types of blood tests.
Why the names so similar?
People thought they were the same disease until the
19th century when a doctor determined they were different infections.
Occurrence of the diseases
Typhoid fever, on the other hand, is less common in
the United States. UU It often manifests itself after a patient has travelled
to Asia or India. The California Department of Public Health receives reports
of approximately 75 cases of typhoid fever in the state each year.
Treatment of Typhoid and Typhus
Fortunately, both infections are treatable. Each one
responds to different types of antibiotics.
Prevention of both these Diseases
It can reduce the risk of typhus transmitted by
fleas by avoiding contact with fleas. For example, make sure your pets are
treated with flea protection. Also, keep rodents away from your home and place
of work. You can avoid typhoid fever by getting vaccinated and carefully choose
what you eat or drink when you travel to countries where typhoid fever is most
common. Talk to your doctor before travelling to see if a typhoid vaccine is
appropriate. Adheres to bottled water and fully cooked foods or fruits and
vegetables that must be peeled. Washing your hands is also important.
Steps to avoid these Diseases
Contact your doctor if you develop any of the
symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headache and a rash on the trunk or back.
Be sure to tell your health care provider if you have been travelling recently.
A complete travel history can be critical to obtaining the correct diagnosis.
